Owning a small business can be a very rewarding experience. Whether you are making an amazing product or providing a valuable service, working for yourself can be empowering and exciting. However, running a small business does bring its own set of challenges. One of these challenges is how to market yourself.
HOW CAN I PROMOTE MY BUSINESS?
One of the most common questions we get at The Small Business Centre is “How do I promote myself and my business?”. While there are many answers to this question, let’s start with the simplest one. Being Seen! Letting people know who you are and what you do is crucial to the success of your business. The good news is, there are many ways to do this that are inexpensive or don’t cost anything. You can be active on social media, utilize free marketing platforms (i.e Mailchimp), join networking groups and attend networking events and sponsor or donate your time to a local charity. Even during Covid-19 there are creative ways to make yourself visible.
One of the biggest things to keep in mind is that when people don’t see you, they don’t necessarily think of you. What this means is that if they don’t see or hear about your business consistently, they can forget about you. It doesn’t mean they don’t WANT to do business with you, they just don’t think of it because you're not on their radar.
WHY IS VISIBILITY SO IMPORTANT?
Being visible isn’t always about immediate sales. It’s about building an image; a reputation. The more people know about you, the more they will trust you. If they can’t use your product or service themselves, they may start referring you to their friends. Regardless of how it shakes out, being visible can go a long way in helping your business grow.
My goal this year is to reach out to the small businesses in Oxford County and help them as we transition through Covid-19 restrictions and head towards a post Covid world.
